On Tuesday 30th July, Stage 2 students travelled to Sydney for an excursion complementing their COGs unit of work ‘Our Fleeting Past’. The excursion had been a long time coming, with date changes due to our busy schedule here at school. BUT the day had finally arrived and the students (and teachers!) were all eager to get on the road!
We departed school at 8am on Tuesday morning and heading down the F3 to The Rocks in Sydney. The bus dropped us off in Harrington Street where the students had Fruito, topping up their energy levels before heading to some fun activities.
Two groups were formed between the three classes; 2/3F and half of 3A and 3T and half of 3A. Both groups went to two locations alternatively. The first being The Rocks Discovery Museum and the second to the archaeological site at the Big Dig.
The Rocks Discovery Museum tells the story of The Rocks area from pre-European days to present. It houses a unique collection of images and archaeological artefacts in The Rocks. The students were able to use touch screens, listen to audio and feel artefacts given them a hands-on experience of the area’s history.
Year 3 students had lunch at First Fleet Park in the background of the beautiful surrounds of Circular Quay.
The students participated in the ‘Dirt Detectives’ program at the Big Dig where a guide assisted students to work as archaeologists to excavate artefacts from the site and use their investigative skills to discover what life was really like for the convicts who lived in The Rocks during the early years of the colony.
At 2:30 we headed back to Harrington Street to hop back on the bus and head back up the F3 to school. The students had a fabulous day learning about and exploring the area where the first settlers lived in the early days. A huge thank you to all of the parents who assisted us on the excursion, the teachers for their organisation of the event and to the students for their fabulous behaviour. They certainly did Wamberal Public School proud.
